Twinings began as a drytea and coffee shop founded by Thomas Twining in the heart of London’s Strand. With approximately 2,000 coffeehouses in London offering an assortment ofbeverages including coffee, hot chocolate, rum, brandy and arrack, Thomas waskeen to stand out from the competition, so introduced fine quality tea as a newoffering. Tea was increasingly fashionable to drink and before long Thomas wasselling more dry tea than wet. By 1717 Thomas Twining had acquired two adjacenthouses enabling him to convert one into a shop specifically for handcrafted andblended teas alongside the Coffee House.
Twinings’ unwaveringcommitment to quality has spanned centuries and is a principle we still adhereto today. We were also privileged to have first been honoured with a RoyalWarrant in 1837 by Queen Victoria, after appointing Twinings as a supplier of teato her household and have supplied every successive British Monarch since.
Our foray into India, a nation deeply rooted intea culture, was not just an expansion; it was a thoughtful conversation between heritage and local sensibilities. Entering the Indian market in theearly 2000s, Twinings sought to introduce a new perspective to the tea ritual.Rather than competing with the everyday cup, we aspired to elevate it, enablingconsumers to enjoy great tasting teas and infusions from around the global attheir own table.
